Microbiology is a science that has remained largely unchanged since the time of Louis Pasteur – time-intensive with a large reliance on manual processing.  Now Australia’s first automated microbiology system has been installed at Liverpool and is helping ensure patients receive the right treatment faster. A second system has just gone online at Westmead.

The systems have only just come on line but early data at Liverpool shows time to results across a range of samples has reduced by an average of 10 to 15 hours.   Around 25% of results are available to clinical teams a full day earlier than in the past and this allows doctors and nurses to choose the right antibiotics and treatment faster.
