Dr Gary Koerbin
Chief Medical Laboratory Scientist
Gary (Gus) works with the NSW Health Pathology networks on scientific, technical and laboratory issues and provides advice on scientific and technical workforce issues.
He has more than 30 years' experience in pathology laboratories. Prior to joining NSW Health Pathology in late 2013, he spent nine years as Principal Scientist with ACT Pathology. He helped revamp the undergraduate and post graduate curriculum for diagnostic pathology for the University of Canberra and holds an adjunct Associate Professor appointment with that University. Gus has also worked in senior scientific roles in Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania and Saudi Arabia.
He has a Bachelor of Applied Science from University of Tasmania and a PhD from The University of Canberra. He has published over 100 scientific journal articles, book chapters and abstracts and was an Associate Editor of the textbook Methods in Clinical Chemistry; an accessory work to the 5th edition of Kaplan and Pesce’s: Clinical Chemistry: Theory, Analysis, Correlation. Gus is also an Associate Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and the Australian College of Health Service Management.
His current scientific interests include cardiac biomarkers, particularly troponin and harmonization of reference intervals. He really appreciates the support, suggestions and help offered to him by staff on his visits to the NSWHP laboratories around the state.
